Students from CUMTB Won the Special Prize of the National College Students' Chemical Engineering Design Competition for the First Time

The final of the 19th National College Students' Chemical Engineering Design Competition, "Tianzheng Design Cup", was held at Tianjin University from August 14th to 17th, 2025. CUMTB team performed exceptionally well and achieved excellent results. The "Brain Sulfoxburst" team, composed of students from the Chemical Engineering department of the class of 2022, won the National Grand Prize. This achievement marked a historic breakthrough for the University in the competition - winning the top national award for the first time since the team formed in 2010 and represented North China in the national finals for 15 consecutive years since 2011. In addition, the "Sulfone Cloud" team also performed exceptionally well, winning the first prize in the North China region and the second prize in the national finals.

The National College Students' Chemical Engineering Design Competition, co-organized by the China Chemical Society and the China Chemical Education Association, aims to comprehensively cultivate college students' innovative thinking, engineering skills, teamwork spirit, and enhance their engineering design and practical abilities. Since its launch in February this year, the competition has attracted 4,437 teams from 479 universities, with the number of participants exceeding 20,000 for the first time. After half a year of careful preparation, 2,731 teams finally submitted their entries. After rigorous selection in each region, 73 outstanding teams stood out and advanced to the national finals.

The competition, titled "Design a Clean Production Branch of Dimethyl Sulfoxide for a Large Chemical Enterprise", closely adheres to the concept of "innovation-driven, green development" and delves deeply into the cutting-edge technologies of clean production of DMSO. The University actively organized teachers and students to participate in the competition. A total of 10 teams, including "Mind Sulfoxstorm" and "SulfoxCloud", were sent to compete and all successfully submitted their works. The team adhered to the principle of "the first instructor's responsibility combined with collective guidance", and since the topic was announced in early February, it went through the stages of team registration, scheme design, work submission, university internal defense and regional competition letter evaluation, and finally selected two teams to represent the University in the North China region competition. Among them, the "Mind Sulfoxstorm" team and the "Sulfoxcloud" team performed exceptionally well in the North China regional finals, winning the regional special prize and the first prize respectively, and the "Mind Sulfoxstorm" team successfully advanced to the national finals. In the half month from the end of the regional competition to the national finals, teachers and students of the team went all out, through multiple rounds of work revision, feature refinement and innovation point extraction, as well as high-intensity defense practice. In the end, the "Mind Sulfoxburst" team lived up to expectations and won the grand prize of the national finals.
