From our correspondent — On the morning of July 8, the National Science and Technology Award Conference, the Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the 11th National Congress of the China Association for Science and Technology were grandly convened in Beijing. Four research achievements from China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing (CUMTB) received National Science and Technology Awards.

As the second completing unit, CUMTB, with Academician Wu Qiang and Professor Zeng Yifan participating, was awarded the Second-Class National Science and Technology Progress Award for the project Key Technologies and Equipment for Transparent Perception and Intelligent Prevention & Control of Hidden Mine Water Hazards. As the second completing unit, the project Key Technologies and Engineering Demonstration for High-quality Construction and Utilization of Coal Mining Subsidence Areas, with Professor Cui Ximin as a key participant, won the Second-Class National Science and Technology Progress Award. As the fourth completing unit, the project Key Technologies and Application for Green and Intelligent Development of Scarce High-quality Residual Coal and Coalbed Methane, involving Professor He Fulian, received the Second-Class National Science and Technology Progress Award. The project Energy Analysis Theory of Rock Damage and Catastrophe in Deep Resource Extraction, led by Academician Xie Heping with participation by Professor Peng Ruidong, was granted the Second-Class National Natural Science Award.

The project Key Technologies and Equipment for Transparent Perception and Intelligent Prevention & Control of Hidden Mine Water Hazards pioneered the time-varying seepage theory for matrix-fracture dual media in mining-disturbed rock masses. It invented integrated detection technologies and equipment combining underground intelligent drilling and borehole geophysical prospecting, and built an intelligent technical system for graded early warning and precise prevention and control of water hazards based on transparent geological technology.

The project Key Technologies and Engineering Demonstration for High-quality Construction and Utilization of Coal Mining Subsidence Areas put forward for the first time the theory of long-term movement of goaf strata and prediction technology for surface residual deformation. It overcame bottlenecks in the precise treatment of goaf strata and offered a Chinese solution for high-quality utilization of subsidence areas worldwide.

The project Key Technologies and Application for Green and Intelligent Development of Scarce High-quality Residual Coal and Coalbed Methane established an exploration system and mineability evaluation method for the occurrence of residual coal and coalbed methane. It developed dynamic roadway support and active pressure relief technologies for residual coal mining, achieving a leap from hard-to-mine or abandoned residual coal to large-scale extraction.

The project Energy Analysis Theory of Rock Damage and Catastrophe in Deep Resource Extraction created the energy analysis theory of rock damage and catastrophe in deep mining, providing theoretical support for safe and efficient exploitation of deep resources as well as early warning, prevention and control of major engineering disasters.

Moving forward, the University will thoroughly implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important expositions on education, science and technology, and talent development. Closely responding to major strategic demands including national energy and resource security and dual-carbon transition, the University will continue to strengthen its organized research system and produce more high-level landmark achievements to support industrial advancement and national development.
