From our correspondent — Clarivate Analytics recently released the latest ESI statistics. The discipline of Chemistry at the University has entered the ESI Global Top 1‰ for the first time. To date, four disciplines of the University (Engineering, Geosciences, Environment/Ecology, and Chemistry) are ranked among the ESI Global Top 1‰, and ten disciplinary fields are within the ESI Global Top 1%. ESI (Essential Science Indicators) is an international academic assessment tool developed by Clarivate Analytics based on Web of Science Core Collection data. It serves as a key metric for evaluating the international academic standing of disciplines. Entry into the ESI Global Top 1‰ is widely regarded as recognition of world-class academic excellence.

Chemistry and its related subfields constitute an important component of the University’s disciplinary system and provide foundational support for the development of the “Double First-Class” discipline clusters. In recent years, the University has continuously optimized its disciplinary layout and strengthened distinctive development, promoting in-depth interdisciplinary integration between chemistry-related research and engineering disciplines such as mining, energy, chemical engineering, materials and environment. Distinctive strengths have been forged in areas including clean and efficient utilization of energy resources, energy conversion and storage, advanced energy storage materials and devices, as well as carbon capture, conversion and utilization.

These research streams have effectively boosted the development of the Doctoral Program in the first-level discipline of Chemical Engineering and Technology and related disciplines. They underpin the University’s pilot comprehensive reform task under the Three-Year Action Plan for Building a Powerful Country in Education. The discipline also participates extensively in Beijing’s key interdisciplinary program “Clean Energy Science” and the University’s self-established interdisciplinary program “New Energy Science and Engineering”. It plays an active role in high-level talent cultivation and scientific research innovation, injecting new momentum into the University’s drive to build a world-class energy science and technology university.
